Bushido
“Way of the Warrior”

Most cultures have a code of ethics and/or way of life that is considered acceptable or expected in their context. What is most interesting to me about the Samurai code of ethics is that each of these values was part of preparing the warrior for his death. Dying as a servant to the emperor was the ultimate honor in giving ones life as a sacrifice to a righteous cause. Being a warrior meant facing death was likely and therefore dying with courage, honor, loyalty, etc was remembered by others after death.

This code was and is still practiced by many others long after the age of the Samurai. We think these ethics are important for all who practice Jujitsu because these values teach honor and respect for others and oneself, without teaching wrong attitudes such as arrogance or maliciousness. We have listed the top seven values of Bushido below.

- Rectitude -

Not wavering, right attitude, doing the right thing at the right time

- Courage -

Bravery, heroism, doing what is right for a righteous cause

- Benevolence -

Universal love, compassion and mercy towards mankind

- Respect -

Right action and speech toward others, courtesy

- Honesty -

Sincerity, truthfulness,

- Honor -

Consciousness of personal dignity and worth

- Loyalty -

Devotion, especially toward a superior and/or cause
