What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu, traditionally known as “Jujutsu”, is an unarmed self defense system. Other spelling variations include Jujitsu, Jiu-Jitsu and Ju Jitsu. It is literally translated as “Gentle Art/Science”, “Art/Science of Softness” or “Art/Science of Yielding”. This is partially because practitioners of Jujitsu can control and apply techniques in order to stop or subdue an opponent with the ability to not harm their opponent by choice. Traditionally, off balancing ones opponent with technique and/or using their strength and momentum against them, not ones physical strength, was the goal. So we see that softness/gentleness, not physical strength, is at the root of Jujitsu.

It was developed by the Samurai’s of ancient Japan. Various warriors and teachers implemented techniques from ancient forms of self defense and developed new and improved methods to create Jujitsu (I will use this spelling variation).

It was designed to defend oneself in the event that a weapon was unavailable or unable to be used. Jujitsu utilizes techniques such as throws, locks, strikes, pins, leverage, submissions and off balancing to subdue and stop attackers.

Jujitsu has spread throughout the world and different styles have developed with different focuses. Judo, Aikido, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Ninjutsu/Ninpo and others all derive from the ancient system of Jujitsu.

Jujitsu has proven itself effective both on the battlefield and the streets. Today we practice techniques that have been time tested and developed to deal with a variety of attacks and opponents. We also practice techniques that have developed over time as Jujitsu has evolved and is still evolving.

Jujitsu also addresses all types and scenarios of attacks including: stand up, ground fighting, weapon attacks, multiple attackers and opponents of larger size and/or strength.

Jujitsu contains standardized techniques originally called “kata” and sparring originally called “randori”. Self defense and sport versions have developed over the centuries. Jujitsu is a term used for a variety of systems practiced today with various focuses.

I hope you will find Jujitsu to be as rewarding as I have.
